Queen Victoria commissioned four paintings of her beloved Balmoral Castle. One painting for each aspect of the castle, each to be in a different medium and painted by a different artist. This painting is the Oil medium, painted by the well known artist Albert Dunnington. The painting never reached Queen Victoria as when it was finally completed, Albert Dunnington like many poor artists of his time, used the painting to pay for his lodgings at the Strathern Hotel in Fife, Scotland. Since that time the original and its history has remained in the same Scottish family. It is believed that other three paintings were purchased by Queen Victoria and have since then, hung in Balmoral Castle as part of the Royal art collection.
Purchased by Queen Victoria in 1848, Balmoral Castle remains a private residence of the Royal Family. Queen Elizabeth II; who in 2012 celebrates her Diamond Jubilee, and the Duke of Edinburgh, visit the castle annually for their summer retreat. Lying in the centre of Balmoral estate, Balmoral Castle is set amongst the magnificent scenery of Royal Deeside in the shadows of Lochnagar, located in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, near to the Cairngorm Mountains and historic city of Aberdeen. For centuries the castle has remained a favourite residence of the Royal family, offering privacy, fresh air and countryside pursuits. The castle hosted newly weds Prince William and Kate Middleton for their honeymoon after the Royal Wedding. As a national icon for the UK, the castle combines the functionality of a royal residence and working countryside estate with its high demand as a popular tourist attraction.
The Queen will hold a garden party at Balmoral Castle as she rounds off her main Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Scotland in August.
